Rail officials Thursday told the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation board they expect the state's largest public works project ever to cost between $550 million and $700 million more than the $5.26 billion estimated. ~~ Legislators who hold the state's purse strings are taking a wait-and-see approach to the idea of extending a 0.5 percent Oahu surcharge on the state general excise tax beyond 2022 to help pay for Honolulu's rail transit system.

Mokulele Airlines now offers same-day rush shipping service for enveloped up to 5 pounds and boxes under 70 pounds to and from its 10 airport locations on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, Lanai and Molokai. Customers can drop off a package at a Mokulele ticket counter, and it will be available for pickup at the destination airport a few hours later.

Aloha Tofu, one of Hawaii's largest producers of fresh tofu, is starting a new venture at Honolulu's Dole Cannery that includes three components - retail, a commercial kitchen and frying operations, the head of the more than 60-year-old Honolulu-based company told PBN. "This is a foray into something new for us," Paul Uyehara, president of Aloha Tofu, which has been owned by his family for generations .

Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard plans to hire about 730 workers this fiscal year. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the shipyard will host a job fair on January 28th.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Friday it's now expected to cost from $550 to $700 million more than what was originally planned. Rail officials blame the higher cost in part on $190 million in added costs from construction delays that stemmed from legal challenges and city officials awarding contracts before they were authorized and ready to build.
