In this Friday, Nov. 21, 2014 photo, Toshio Yazawa, 84-year-old pensioner, poses for a portrait at a park in Saitama, north of Tokyo. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s choice last week to postpone a sales tax hike to help fend off recession comes less as a relief than as cause for greater concern over how the country will cope with its ballooning national debt. Japan’s younger generation will shoulder a growing burden of the costs for its aging population, but even now things are tough for some pensioners living on fixed incomes, said Yazawa. “For big companies things are going well, but for us ordinary people it’s just getting harder.” (AP Photo/Eugene Hoshiko)

This 2007 photo provided by Gerd Stern, shows poet and playwright in Woodstock, N.Y. For more than 50 years, Stern had been wrongly accused of tossing what writer Jack Kerouac called "the greatest piece of writing I ever saw" over the side of a houseboat. The lost letter credited with inspiring Kerouac to create a new style of prose, called Beat literature, suddenly surfaced, no one was happier than Stern. The Associated Press reported Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, that the 16,000-word screed to Kerouac from his friend and literary muse Neal Cassady was found intact last week in a house in Oakland, Calif. Actually poet Allen Ginsberg had sent the letter to Richard Emerson at Golden Goose Press, and he didn't bother to read it. The auction house Profiles in History is putting the archive up for sale on Dec. 17. (AP Photo/Judith Sokoloff)
