Prep roundup: Tech takes thriller over Willmar, 4-3

St. Cloud Times — St. Cloud Times, Minn.

May 19--St. Cloud Tech finished unbeaten in the Central Lakes Conference, but it wasn't easy.

The Tigers (10-0 Central Lakes, 14-3 overall) beat Willmar, 4-3.

It came down to the No. 3 doubles match with the team score tied 3-3 Thursday at South Courts.

The Tigers' Nick Portz and Scott Kippley beat Wilmar's Ryan Ackerman and Pablo Bernabeau-Guerra 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4).

"Everybody got to watch that match," Tech head coach Paul Bates said. "It was exciting for the kids."

Tech begins Section 8-2A play Monday at Alexandria. The Tigers are the top seed in the North Sub-Section and play the winner of No. 4 Sartell and No. 5 Bemidji at 1:30 p.m.

Cathedral 5, St. John's Prep 2

ST. JOSEPH -- St. Cloud Cathedral beat St. John's Prep for the third time this season in their Section 6A playoff match at the College of St. Benedict.

The Crusaders' No. 1 double steam of Losha Schriefels and Ryan Ferris beat the Johnnies' Adam and Ben Lepinski, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

Cathedral (8-6) advances to play Litchfield at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Benedict in the section semifinals. Foley and Pine City play in the other semifinal at noon. The championship is at 2 p.m.

Alexandria 7, Apollo/Sauk Rapids 0

Derek Berning of Alexandria beat Gage Donovan of St. Cloud Apollo/Sauk Rapids 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles in the Central Lakes Conference match at Apollo.

Brainerd 6, Sartell 1

BRAINERD -- Kyle Harthan picked up Sartell's lone win at No. 2 singles.

COLLEGEVILLE -- Brandon Gill went 51/3 innings for the win and Eli Emerson tossed 12/3 scoreless innings for the save. Gill struck out four, walked one and allowed six hits and one earned run.

Isaac Holthaus took the loss. Peter Nelson tossed three hitless innings in relief, striking out two.

Jordan Barth was 2-for-3 with an RBI and William Huls was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Rocori.

Joey Atkinson was 1-for-2 and Casey Hormann was 1-for-3 with an RBI for Apollo.

COLLEGEVILLE -- Grant Bangen tossed a one-hit shutout, losing his no-hitter in the seventh, to lead Willmar past Sauk Rapids at Haugen Field.

ST. CLOUD TECH 9, BIG LAKE 3

BIG LAKE -- St. Cloud Tech, ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 3A, scored five runs in the top of the first on its way to the nonconference win.

Ethan Hopper, Drew Bulson and Austin Nikolas all had two hits for Tech (14-0). Hopper drove in three runs. Nikolas and Chris Backes each drove in two.

Tommy Friesen went five innings for the pitching win, with five strikeouts. Nikolas tossed the final two innings, striking out six.

Little Falls 10,

Albany 0 (6 innings)

LITTLE FALLS -- A.J. Jenks tossed a one-hitter in the six-inning complete game, striking out eight and walking two. He also homered and went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.

Jake Kappahn also homered for the Flyers and was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Austin Weisz was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

For Albany, Isaac Nett went 1-for-3.

BRAINERD 8-5, SARTELL 4-2

BRAINERD -- In a completion of a suspended game, Brainerd scored four runs in the top of the 10th to beat Sartell 8-4. In the second game, the Warriors beat the Sabres, 5-2.

Brainerd and Sartell were tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth in the suspended game. Braydon Borg had a two-run single for Sartell.

In the second game, Alex Kreilling had two hits and an RBI and Brandon Kramer had two hits for Sartell.

Paynesville 10-6,

Kimball 2-1

PAYNESVILLE -- Grant Fuchs went six innings to get the win in Game 1, 10-2, and Spencer Imholte went six innings to earn the Game 2 victory, 6-1.

Fuchs struck out four, walked two and allowed four hits and two earned runs. Sam Oehrlein pitched a scoreless seventh. Imholte struck out seven and walked two, scattering six hits and allowing one earned run. Nick Gabrielson pitched a scoreless seventh.

Sam Haines had a big day for the Bulldogs, going 4-for-7 with two triples in the two games. Garrett Leusink was 3-for-4 in the Game 1.

For Kimball, J.T. Harren was 2-for-4 in the two games.

Eden Valley-Watkins 3, HLWW 0

WATKINS -- Junior Matt Schindler tossed a complete-game shutout, striking out five.

Reese Jansen had three hits and Damian Lincoln added two for Eden Valley-Watkins in the Central Minnesota Conference win over Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted.

Pierz 5, Osakis 1

PIERZ -- Alec Lochner tossed a six-hitter, striking out six, walking no one and allowing one earned run.

Matt Kummet, Preston Rocheleau and Alex Funk all had two hits.

Royalton 10, Pillager 1

ROYALTON -- Freshman Ethan Walcheski was 3-for-4 with four RBI, senior Caleb Smieja was 3-for-3 RBI and senior Thomas Fountain got the nonconference win for the Royals (10-7). Fountain gave up six hits and one earned run with two strikeouts and four walks in six innings.

WAITE PARK -- St. Cloud Apollo improved to 4-7 in the Central Lakes Conference and 7-11 overall with the shutout win at River's Edge Park.

Tech fell to 7-6 in the conference and 9-10 overall.

SARTELL -- Julianna Tavale went 2-for-3 and had two RBI and Ryley Trobec got the pitching win, striking out six, to lead the Sabres.

Big Lake 1, Little Falls 0

BIG LAKE -- Anna Peters tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out six and walking one, to lead the Hornets (10-9).

Angelsa Meschle was 1-for-3 and Chelsea Mora was 1-for-2 for the Flyers. Kali Mammenga took the complete-game loss, tossing six innings. She allowed two hits and one unearned run, striking out three and walking none.

Pillager 3, Royalton 2

ROYALTON -- Pillager won the nonconference game over the Royals (11-6).

Jordan Bzdok, Brooklyn Pekarek and Amy Neu all were 1-for-3 for Royalton.

Sartell 3rd at CLC meet

FERGUS FALLS -- Alexandria shot a 305 to take first, Brainerd (308) was second, Sartell (312) third and St. Cloud Tech (320) fourth in the Central Lakes Conference meet at Pebble Lake Golf Club.

Sartell's Austin Pietrowski and Isaac Murtley tied for third with 75s. Tech freshman Leo Stepan shot a 77 to take eighth. Tyler Streitz shot 78 for the Tigers.

Brainerd's Jack Evans shot a 72 to win medalist honors.

Paynesville's Jordan Wegner took medalist honors with a 40.

Preston Kopel of Foley and Charlie stuck of Cathedral tied for second. Each shot a 76.
